As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who will participate meaningfully in the development of their region, the country and beyond. S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of DUT’s Communications team, recently spoke with DUT Football star Raymond Sotiya, to share his experience in balancing sport and academics and how he embodies the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Football Club?
A: “I joined the DUT football team in 2025 during my first year.”
Q: What sparked your interest in football?
A: “I grew up playing football with friends in my community. It became a passion, and I wanted to improve my skills and compete at a higher level while also growing academically.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play as a centre back. My main role is to defend against opponents, stop attacks, and protect the goalkeeper. I also support the defence by keeping the team organised and maintaining stability at the back.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “I’m interested in basketball because it requires speed, strength, and endurance, qualities I’ve developed through football.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “The SA DUMA Foundation Tournament. Competing against strong teams was a great experience that helped me improve my performance.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “It helps students develop discipline, teamwork and leadership skills. Sport also promotes a healthy lifestyle and creates opportunities for personal growth.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My role model is Virgil van Dijk. His leadership and defensive skills inspire me to improve my game and grow as a player.”

A: “Yes, I want to continue developing and reach a professional level while also completing my studies.”

A: “I inspire young people in my community to work hard, stay disciplined, and believe in their dreams.”

A: “Sport has made me more disciplined, confident, and responsible, while also teaching me how to balance my studies and personal life.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?
A: “DUT can use social media to promote games, organise entertainment during matches, and encourage students to support their teams.”
