Juggling work and academics did not stop Tracy Samuels from pursuing her dreams, as she walked the stage to graduate with her Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting, a milestone she described as both demanding and deeply transformative. She graduated during the Facuty of Accounting and Informatics session, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
Originally from Wentworth, south of Durban, the 35-year-old currently works in the Finance Office within the Postgraduate Office at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), where she manages all finance-related matters in the faculty. Since joining the institution in May 2021, she has not only excelled professionally but has also committed herself to personal and academic growth.
Her decision to continue studying while working full-time was inspired by a desire to create better opportunities for herself. After completing her National Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting, Tracy knew she wanted to further her education to strengthen her future career prospects.
Like many working professionals pursuing further studies, she faced moments of exhaustion and pressure. One of her greatest challenges was balancing work, studies, and personal commitments simultaneously. However, she overcame these obstacles by planning, remaining disciplined, and tackling each challenge one step at a time.
“A major challenge I experienced was balancing academic/work responsibilities with personal commitments. At times it felt overwhelming, but I overcame it by staying disciplined, planning and taking things one step at a time. The late nights and early mornings,” she explained.
Throughout her studies, Tracy found unwavering support in her life partner, whom she describes as her biggest source of encouragement. His understanding and constant motivation helped her remain committed to achieving her goals.
“My life partner encouraged me to stay motivated and committed to my studies and understood when it was time to put in the work,” she said.
Completing her qualification has broadened her perspective and boosted her confidence. She believes the knowledge and skills she has gained will contribute significantly to her professional growth and open doors to future promotions and opportunities.
Currently registered part-time for a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Accounting, Tracy already has her sights set on pursuing a master’s degree in the future. Her long-term aspiration is to grow into a senior finance role where she can contribute meaningfully to strategic decision-making and organisational success.
