DUT Staffer’s Acting Debut In Local Soapie

Jabu Dlamini; DUT staffer, Master’s student, film director and now actress, made her first appearance on popular local soapie: Uzalo last week (Tuesday, 5 July 2016).

Dlamini plays the role of a woman who has breast cancer and has been sick for a while but fails to find treatment for her disease. She then seeks the assistance of her resident pastor who allegedly has powers to cure the sick. The pastor however turns on the woman and sexually victimises her instead of helping her.

“This role is a milestone in my acting career. Although I have been in the industry for a while now, this is my first time appearing on a soapie or on a major television network,” said Dlamini.
Uzalo is a Durban based soapie that aires on SABC 1 from Monday to Wednesday. Set on eThekwini’s KwaMashu Township, the production tells the story of two family dynasties; the Mdletshes and the Xulus and the two young men who carry their hopes and legacies.

Speaking about her current role, Dlamini said it was an eye opener for her with regards to cancer. “Although this role came as a shock to my family and my partner whom in the midst of being busy I did not share that the role required me to undress, it has, however, taught me a lot that I did not know about cancer,” she said.

Dlamini’s other work includes her own film company, Lujabu Projects. She has also appeared on numerous short films on Mzansi Bioscope and Mzansi Magic and has also worked as a content contributor on Ukhozi fm and has presented on Vibe fm.
