DUT Statement on Lauretta Gloria Ngcobo’s Passing

The Durban University of Technology is saddened by the passing of writer, literary figure and activist, Lauretta Gloria Ngcobo.

In April 2014, Ngcobo was honoured by DUT with an Honorary Doctorate in Arts and Design in recognition of her outstanding contribution as a literary figure, her exceptional involvement during her political tenure, her leadership involving major enterprises as well as her significant community engagement efforts that focused on education, literacy and rural development.

“The entire DUT community mourns the loss of Ma Ngcobo,” said Alan Khan, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at DUT. “She has left a proud legacy and it was an honour for DUT when she accepted our invitation to receive the Honorary Doctorate last year. On behalf of our Chancellor, Judge Vuka Tshabalala, our Vice-Chancellor Professor Ahmed Bawa and our students, staff and alumni, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr Ngcobo. May she rest in peace.”

Ngcobo, who had been confined to a wheelchair after suffering a stroke, was honoured to be at her graduation ceremony last year. Speaking on her mother’s behalf, daughter Zabantu Ngcobo said her mother (Lauretta) was extremely humbled and proud to be given such a recognition for her work and reiterated that the writer had set out to achieve whatever she had wanted to achieve and given the opportunity, she (Lauretta) would do it all over again.
