DUT STUDENT LEADER LAUDED FOR OBTAINING HIS QUALIFICATION

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s), Student Representative Council (SRC) Organisation and Accommodation Officer in Durban, Sibusiso Mbhele (23) from Ibisi, Mzimkhulu graduated for his Diploma in Marketing on Friday, 26 May 2023 during the DUT Autumn graduation that was held at Olive Convention Centre (OCC).

When he was admitted for a Diploma in Marketing in 2020, he felt extremely jubilant to be part of the DUT community as he had never thought of a university where one can simultaneously pursue academics and other personal commitments.

When he was enrolled for his diploma, he realised that DUT is a community that responds to the interests of every student and it is a very accommodative institution. He mentioned that during his academic journey at DUT he did not only find studies to be his specialisation but also politics which he has dedicated his spare time to. Coming from a disadvantaged background triggered his interest to join the university politics, currently he serves as an Organisation and Accommodation Officer.

“My journey at DUT has been an amazing for myself as an individual and also for the students that I am leading. Graduating as an SRC member proves that I am an extraordinary hard worker, as it is a full-time responsibility with so much commitments, including meetings, attending to issues on campuses and in residences.

“To graduate while being in this position is a proof that everything is possible through hard work and determination. I am a living testimony of my commitments,” said Mbhele.

When he told his family that he is graduating they were very happy for him since they value education. He stated that in the midst of all circumstances and leadership commitments he does not let his family down by not obtaining his qualification.

He explained that marketing has always been his dream job because it responds to economic matters. He wanted to get enrolled in Business Studies so that he can contribute to economic growth and the development of South Africa. He chose to dedicate himself to serving the society because he believes that being in a business sector is going to make it easier for him to connect to the society and grow the economy together.

Mbhele is planning to further his studies until he obtains his PhD, but all of that will depend on him finding a sponsorship for his studies. He is currently busy applying for sponsors that will fund his postgraduate studies next year. He is aiming to grow as an individual in the business sector and contribute to the growth of the business sector of South Africa. His objective is to own a business.

He encouraged students to focus on their studies so that they will be able to defeat unemployment, crime, corruption, alcohol, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and all other socio-economic issues.
