DUT STUDENTS EXPERIENCE A JOURNEY OF CHINESE MODERNISATION

A total of 20 students and staff from the Durban University of Technology Confucius Institute (DUT CI), recently embarked on a 10-day enriching cultural exchange at the “Experiencing Charming Fujian” Summer Camp in China. Hosted by the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU) in Fuzhou, this programme offered participants a unique window into Chinese culture, modernisation, cutting-edge technology, and BRICS cooperation. With a diverse array of activities, the camp deepened the ties between China and South Africa, while highlighting China’s remarkable achievements across various sectors.

A Cultural Feast

Throughout the camp, attendees were immersed in the vibrant cultural heritage of Fujian province. From the traditional jasmine tea ceremonies in Fuzhou to captivating performances of Chinese music, dance and calligraphy, students gained firsthand experience of the depth and elegance of Chinese traditions. One of the highlights was the cultural gala hosted by FAFU, which left a lasting impression on participants.

George Shelembe, a staff member from the innobiz DUT Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation reflected:
“The gala brought together international students in a celebration of Chinese traditions, creating memories that will remain with us for a long time.”

Another standout moment was a tea-making demonstration by Master Zhang, who has honed his craft over 40 years. Asimbonge Dube, a sport studies student at DUT, was captivated by Master Zhang’s passion and attention to detail. “Tea in China is more than just a drink; it’s a cultural symbol that bridges generations,” he observed.

Modernisation and Infrastructure Development

The camp also showcased China’s strides in modernisation and urban development. Participants were particularly impressed by the country’s clean streets, green spaces and advanced public transport systems, which reflect China’s commitment to sustainable growth. Andiswa Mtshali, a DUT horticulture student remarked: “China’s focus on green transportation and its environmental policies are truly inspiring. Their approach to urban planning shows how economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand.”

This experience left participants reflecting on how sustainable development can enhance economies while improving quality of life.

Technological Innovation

A key theme of the camp was China’s leadership in technological innovation. Visits to high-tech companies and innovation centres introduced participants to advancements in virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence and e-commerce. At the Fujian VR Experience Centre, Tylin Sampson, a Mandarin student from the DUT CI, was particularly impressed by the application of VR in industries like architecture and construction. “It was fascinating to see how traditional technologies are being combined with modern innovations,” he said, adding that such integrations could have far-reaching impacts on various sectors.

Meanwhile, Mandisa Manyokole, a public relations student, was struck by the visit to the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Centre, where she learned about China’s advancements in cross-border e-commerce. “China’s progress in logistics and global trade is incredible, and many of these technologies aren’t even available in South Africa yet,” she noted.

BRICS Cooperation and Global Impact

A highlight of the camp was the visit to the BRICS Partnership on New Industrial Revolution Innovation Centre in Xiamen. This centre represents China’s commitment to fostering innovation, industrial cooperation, and sustainable development within the BRICS community. Mandisa Manyokole found the visit transformative, stating, “It showcased China’s leadership in the new industrial revolution and emphasised the importance of BRICS nations working together to solve challenges like economic inequality and unemployment.” She expressed optimism that South Africa can draw inspiration from China’s experiences to drive its own development. The visit underscored the vital role of global partnerships in shaping the future of industrial innovation, with BRICS countries being key players in this transformative process.

Reflections and Future Aspirations

As the camp came to a close, participants left with a wealth of knowledge and a deeper appreciation of China’s achievements. Many students expressed a keen desire to return to China for further studies or exploration. Andiswa Mtshali, inspired by China’s commitment to environmental sustainability, hopes to pursue postgraduate studies in China. Reflecting on the experience, Pamella Ndlovu summarised the collective sentiment, “China’s achievements show us that through collaboration and collective effort, nations can create a brighter future for the next generation.”
