The Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently participated in the gala performance in celebration of the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which was held in Senegal, Dakar.

Despite the impact of COVID-19, China and Africa overcame the difficulties to hold the conference and the performances which were a huge success.

The gala performance of the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, themed at the combination of the Mountain and the Sea, jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and the Ministry of Culture and Information of Senegal was held online.

“This online art performance was performed by Chinese and African artists together in various forms such as song, music, and dance, showing the unique characteristics of China and Africa. The distinctive and beautiful stage art vividly embodied the long history and contemporary connotation of China-Africa culture,” said DUT-CI Director Frank Lin WU

Lin Wu added that the Confucius Institute at DUT organised Chinese Language students from the Faculty of Arts and Design to demonstrate a Zulu ethnic dance with South African characteristics.

“Together with other exciting programmes, they composed a wonderful art show and witnessed the profound friendship between the Chinese and African people. During the conference, the art performances were broadcasted on domestic and African online platforms such as the national central media, Senegal National Television, and the ‘Star Times’ African Channel,” he said.

The Confucius Institute at DUT formally started its operations in February, 2014. It is currently located at the DUT ML Sultan campus. The HSK Test Centre and the International Chinese Language Teacher Examination Centre, which is the only one on the African Continent to have also been established at the DUT Confucius Institute. Since its establishment, DUT CI has dedicated itself to a “one-stop” service center, combining language teaching, culture exchange, innovation and entrepreneurship support, and comprehensive vocational skills and technology training service.
