DUT SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED ITS VACCINATION CENTRE AT THE MIDLANDS CAMPUS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) in partnership with the Kwazulu-Natal Department of Health successfully launched a Vaccination Centre at Indumiso Main Hall (Midlands Campus) on Monday, 20 September 2021.

The Vaccination Centre started operating from the 20th to 30th of September 2021 on weekdays from 08:00am to 15:30pm. All DUT students, staff and Alumni who have not vaccinated are encouraged to get vaccinated. To get vaccinated, students and staff need to bring a valid ID document and a student or staff card.

Dr Sibusiso Sotsaka, lecturer of Arts and Design under the School of Education visited the vaccination centre for his second jab as he had opted for the Pfizer vaccine.

“I got my first vaccine shot early in August at the Royal Show Grounds and they told me to return back after 42 days, I am grateful that the University has offered us the opportunity to have the vaccination centre within the premises,” said Dr Sotsaka.

He went on to say that he has lost a close friend and family members due to COVID-19 and would encourage people to vaccinate.

“Prevention is better than cure,” he added.

Thembeka Zuma of Supacare Cleaning Service team also shared her experience and highlighted that she was nervous at the beginning but she is glad that she took the decision to vaccinate.

“At first I was very sceptical and scared for my life after hearing different stories from the media and close people. I am happy that they provided counselling for people who are scared and who have less knowledge about the vaccine like me,” said Zuma.

“The process was very easy and the COVID-19 Task Team ensured that I am calm and comfortable. I was asked a few questions to ensure that I am in a good state to continue with the process. They took me through the entire registration process and within few minutes I was registered and received a confirmation SMS and then got my jab”, said Phiwokuhle Ndlovu, third-year Bachelor of Education student.

The Vaccination Co-ordinator from the Department of Health, Ms Williams stated that there are so many myths regarding COVID-19, but what she has noticed is that some of the students come to consult only and end up vaccinating after they have been educated.

“Getting vaccinated is an individual’s choice. We will avail ourselves for students and staff at the vaccination centre therefore I encourage them to consult and vaccinate. This really shows that the University cares about the well-being of its staff and students,” added Williams.
