The Advancement and Alumni Relations unit at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) will be launching its alumni recognition initiative called “Alumnus/Alumna of the Month” at the end of January 2025. This initiative seeks to recognise and celebrate the achievements of DUT’s adaptive graduates, highlighting their contributions in their respective fields and their significant impact to society.
According to Ms Ronelle Lyson, Alumni Relations Officer at DUT, this initiative will not only acknowledge the accomplishments of the graduates but will also strengthen the relationship between the university and its alumni, fostering a sense of community and pride. She believes this initiative is aligned with the university’s ENVISION2030 strategy that seeks to produce adaptive graduates that contributes to improving lives and livelihoods.
Each month, a distinguished DUT graduate will be highlighted through the university website, social media channels, and newsletters, sharing his/her inspiring story on driving meaningful change and inspiring others within the community.
“By showcasing the success stories of alumni, we will be promoting excellence and innovation in both academic and professional pursuits. This will inspire current students and prospective ones, demonstrating the potential paths they can take after graduation. The ENVISION2030 fosters a culture of excellence and prepares students to thrive in the global workforce. Showcasing the achievements of alumni, especially those who have made an impact nationally and internationally, reinforces DUT’s global presence and reputation. It aligns with ENVISION 2030’s goal of expanding the university’s global partnerships and networks, making it a key player in the global education landscape,” explained Lyson.
In addition, Lyson indicated that the Advancement and Alumni Relations unit plays a crucial role in fostering a strong relationship between the university and its alumni, as well as supporting the institution’s overall development and growth.
“The Advancement and Alumni Relations unit’s core mission is to engage and build lasting relationships with DUT alumni, supporters, and donors. It serves to support the university’s development efforts, increase alumni involvement, and ensure that alumni remain connected to their alma mater long after graduation. The unit is dedicated to strengthening the university’s reputation, securing financial and non-financial support, and contributing to the development of its academic and research endeavours,” reiterated Lyson.
By encouraging alumni to give back through time, expertise, or donations, Lyson indicated that the unit helps the university make a positive impact on society. She believes through its efforts, the unit continues to foster a sense of pride and loyalty among alumni, ensuring that they stay actively involved in the university’s journey while contributing to its long-term success.
