The Durban University of Technology (DUT) will tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 January 2022 host the 30th Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference (SAUPEC 2022) at the Durban International Convention Centre Complex.
The Conference is scheduled to take place from tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 January 2022 till Thursday, 27 January 2022.
SAUPEC2022 will bring together experts from the industry, academics, and students in engineering, information technology, smart grids, renewable energy technologies, computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, mechatronics, and cyber-physical systems to present research papers, network, and expand the fraternity that has been built as part of the SAUPEC legacy over the last three decades.
Day 1 will be dedicated mainly to the arrival of local and international delegates and readiness at the Durban ICC. Proceedings of the conference will commence on Day 2, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 where the opening address will be delivered by the SAUPEC2022 General Chair, Prof Innocent Ewean Davidson, and delivering the official welcome address will be the DUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement, Professor Sibusiso Moyo. On the same day, the first keynote address titled: “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Modern Power Systems” will be delivered by Prof Ganesh Kumar Venayagamoorthy.
Prof Venayagamoorthy is the Duke Energy Distinguished Professor of Power Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University, USA, since January 2012. Prior to that, he was a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), Rolla, USA, from 2002 to 2011. He was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering, at Durban University of Technology from 1996 to 2002.
The rest of the day will entail technical sessions and the event will close off with a gala dinner, which will bear host to the KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, Mr. Ravi Pillay; a sponsor of the SAUPEC 2022 event.
The second keynote speaker, Prof Dr. İlhami Çolak will deliver his address titled: “Impacts of Digital Transformation on Alternative and Green Energies” on Day 3 of the conference. He is currently a full professor at Nisantasi University. He has published more than 98 papers, 220 conference papers, and 7 books in different subjects including electrical machines, drive systems, machine learning, reactive power compensation, inverter, converter, artificial neural networks, distance learning automation, and alternating energy sources.
Speaking about the conference, Prof Davidson said a total of 127 papers by 400 authors were received for SAUPEC2022. After the stringent technical review process, 66 papers were selected for oral presentations and two dozen papers will be presented in the poster sessions.
