DUT VICE-CHANCELLOR’S CUP BRINGS DURBAN AND MIDLANDS CAMPUSES TOGETHER THROUGH SPORT

Staff and students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) came together at the Indumiso Campus on 17 October 2026 for the fourth annual Vice-Chancellor’s Cup, with teams from Durban and the Midlands competing across a range of sporting codes.

Organised by DUT’s Sport Administration Unit, the tournament featured men’s and women’s football, netball, athletics, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, chess and karate. The event gave participants an opportunity to represent their campuses, test their skills and interact with fellow members of the University community.

DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, attended the event alongside Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, Registrar Dr Maditsane Nkonoane, Professor Pholoho Morojele, Dr Nonhlanhla Mthiyane and Dr Clement Moreku.

Professor Mthembu highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive university environment where students can develop beyond their academic studies.

“It’s about creating an inclusive environment where students can grow and thrive,” he said, encouraging students to participate in the various activities offered by the University and develop into well-rounded individuals.

For Basanda Kheswa, a member of the Midlands Campus men’s football team, the tournament provided another opportunity to build confidence and improve his game. Participating for the second time, he said the experience would help him gain confidence on the field and further develop his football skills.

“This tournament will help me build my confidence as someone who plays football regularly. It also gives me an opportunity to train, improve my skills and gain more experience,” he said.

DUT Registrar Dr Maditsane Nkonoane said the tournament promotes unity, teamwork and the holistic development of students. He also outlined plans being considered to improve attendance by bringing the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup and the Res League Champion of Champions together.

“Although attendance figures have been low compared to Res League Finals programme, plans are underway to re-imagine and integrate the two programmes, by also hosting the ultimate inter-campus Res League Champion of Champions on the same day we host the VC Cup,” he said.

The Durban Campus finished with the highest overall points, taking home the tournament trophy. The event concluded with a medal presentation ceremony recognising participants for their efforts across the different sporting codes.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Cup provided an opportunity for DUT staff and students from both campuses to compete, connect and support their respective teams, highlighting the role of sport in bringing the University community together.
