DUT Virtual Graduation ceremony a success

History was made at the Durban University of Technology during the first Virtual graduation that took place yesterday (Wednesday, 10 June 2020). The graduation was held in place of the April and May graduations that could not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the ceremony 7832 students were honoured in absentia. Various teams at the University had to work around the clock making sure that the class of 2019 was honoured for its achievements but also accommodate COVID-19 regulations.

The Virtual Graduation was broadcasted on SA FM and 5FM about an hour later at 13h10 to ensure that it reaches as many students as possible.

Today, graduates will see their names printed out on the various newspapers: Isolezwe, Daily News, Ilanga, Msunduzi Eyethu and Public Eye (PMB).

Opening the ceremony was the Senior Director of Corporate Affairs, Alan Khan who delivered his welcoming address and introduced DUT’s Chancellor, Ms Nonkululeko Nyembezi to confer the diplomas and degrees.

Khan thanked the graduates for their hard work and dedication before wishing them nothing but success in the future.

Nyembezi sent out her heartiest congratulations to the class of 2019.

“Today you have achieved what has been so far the driving ambition in your life. It is a monumental achievement and you have earned the right to feel good about it. It is your time, so stop and take a moment to savour it. Give yourself a pat on the back and share the special moment with your family and friends who have supported you along the way,” said Nyembezi.

DUT’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor, Thandwa Mthembu also delivered his congratulatory message.

“The world will be looking towards you, armed with your knowledge, skills, innovation and entrepreneurial flair, to build on the achievements of those who opened the way before you, so that you continue the journey to make South Africa a better place. You will have to actively play your part to improve our country’s economic performance, to enhance our political environment, to nurture our social cohesion and to prevent the degeneration of our society that is being exacerbated by violence, crime and corruption. We place a lot of faith in you. We are confident that you will not disappoint us,” said Mthembu.

The famous DUT Alumni, Portia Fakude sang her heart out to celebrate with the graduates whom all have a story to tell about their academic journey.

Some of the graduates had a chance to close off the ceremony on a high note with them singing along to the national anthem.
