The International Education and Partnerships Directorate (IEP) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) extended a warm welcome to international exchange students joining the university for the second-semester on Tuesday, 15 July 2025 at the ML Sultan Campus. This opportunity allows students from around the world to experience South Africa’s rich culture, academic excellence, and stunning natural beauty while pursuing their studies.
The orientation programme was designed to help students make a smooth transition to life at DUT by providing essential information about university resources and support services. Various units from DUT were present to offer guidance and ensure students feel fully prepared for their academic journey. The programme also serves as an essential first step in ensuring that the exchange students feel confident and comfortable as they embark on their academic journey.
Ms Carol Newman, International Education Officer at DUT, opened the event by welcoming all attendees. She congratulated the new students who had travelled from different parts of the world to join DUT and assured them that the university would provide all the necessary support to make their transition enjoyable and successful.
“Welcome to DUT, we are very happy to have you. Your choosing to come to our university is very beneficial for our students as well as they will get to learn about your culture and share their culture with you,” she said.
Presentations were made by representatives from different units including the library, student health, student counselling, campus safety: protection services and a medical aid representative. These presentations outlined the importance of each department/unit and how to access their services.
Mr Charles Sehlogo, the newly appointed Director for Protection Services Unit at DUT, urged students to prioritise their safety by being aware of their surroundings and staying in groups.
“You are here for the first time, and you will want to explore the city, but please find someone who is familiar with the city for safety purposes,” said Mr Sehlogo.
The students will spend a semester at DUT under different faculties which includes Engineering and the Built Environment, Accounting and Informatics and Management Sciences.
