DUT’S INFORMATION AND CORPORATE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT HONOURS EXCELLENCE AT ANNUAL STUDENTS AND INDUSTRY AWARDS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT), Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Department of Information and Corporate Management, recently hosted their annual Students and Industry Awards Ceremony at Coastlands, Musgrave.

The event brought together students, industry partners, staff, mentors, and distinguished guests to reflect on the department’s accomplishments and strengthen their industry–academia partnerships.

The programme director for the day was Dr Noelene Ross, who set a graceful and celebratory tone for the evening. The ceremony opened with a prayer led by Mr Thabo Sikhakhane, which reminded all attendees of the shared purpose and commitment that have guided the department throughout the year.

Giving the welcome speech was the Head of Department, Professor Smangele Moyane, who applauded the resilience and achievements of both students and staff.

“We celebrate not just academic results, but the journey, the dedication, and the spirit of excellence that defines our department. Our partnerships with industry continue to shape well-rounded graduates who are ready to lead and innovate,” said Prof Moyane.

The guest speaker for the event was Mr Phelo Mondli Ndala from PJ SANA Group (PTY) Ltd, who delivered an inspiring address that left students motivated and reflective about their future paths.

“Your qualification is the foundation, but your attitude, your curiosity, and your work ethic will set you apart. “The world is looking for problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and leaders, and I see all of that in the room today,” he said.

Following his keynote, the event moved into the highlight of the day, the presentation of awards. Students were recognised for outstanding academic performance, leadership, excellence during Work-Integrated Learning, and notable contributions to the department.

A special moment unfolded during the open engagement session with industry partners. Representatives from various organisations praised the department, particularly acknowledging Ms Samukelisiwe Phokoye, the ICM WIL coordinator, for her dedication and impactful work.

“Ms Phokoye does not just coordinate placements; she builds relationships and ensures students arrive prepared and committed,” one industry partner shared.

The event concluded with closing remarks from the Advisory Board Chairperson Mr Rohed Sokdeo, who commended the department for fostering strong academic and industry synergy.

“What we witness today is a powerful model of collaboration. When academia and industry work hand in hand, our students thrive and so does our sector,” noted Mr Sokdeo.
