DUT’S KARATE STUDENT SEEKS YOUR HELP TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 13TH WORLD KARATE TOURNAMENT IN TOKYO, JAPAN

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Karate coach and athlete Gugulethu Mngomezulu was recently selected from the South African tournament to participate in the 13th World Karate Tournament in Tokyo, Japan

She is one of seven women who will representing South Africa at the international event which will be hosted in Tokyo, Japan between 16 and 19 November 2023. To participate in the event, Mngomezulu needs to raise an amount of R60 000. The sport administration is assisting with payment for her visa and she has to fundraise the remaining balance for her travel. Miss Mngomezulu is appealing to the DUT community and other stakeholders to help her achieve her dreams by donating/sponsoring towards her travel.

“I request your support in pursuing my dreams as a competitive karate athlete. I believe that with your financial assistance, I can achieve significant milestones in this sport and contribute positively to the community and society,” she said.

Mngomezulu further mentioned that karate has been an integral part of her life since she was young. “It is not just a sport for me, but a way of life that has instilled in me discipline, respect, and determination’’, she alluded.

Over the years, she has trained rigorously, honing her skills, and competing at local and regional levels. She has been fortunate enough to have been selected in karate, including being a champion in University Sport South Africa 2023, South Africa National Champions, Pietermaritzburg Provincial Tournament and awarded as Best Technical Female Fighter and Best Spirited Female Fighter.

She explained that to excel in karate at national and international levels, one needs additional resources and support. “Competing at the highest levels of this sport requires not only significant time commitment but also financial backing for training, coaching, travel, and competition fees. This is where I humbly seek your assistance as I was selected to represent South Africa in Tokyo, Japan this year,” she said.

She shared that people’s support will enable her to dedicate more time and energy to training and competing, ensuring that she reaches her full potential.

“Karate is not just about winning medals; it’s about personal growth, discipline, and character development. By supporting my journey, you are contributing to the development of a well-rounded, disciplined, and resilient individual who can inspire others. With your support, I aim to reach the highest levels of competition, and open doors for me to give back to the community by coaching and mentoring future generations of karate practitioners,” she relayed.

Her recent tournaments for 2023 include:

  • Provincial Tournament in PMB selection for South Africa (position one).
  • USSA Tournament in East London (position one).
  • South African Tournament in East London (position one).
