DUT’s Lungelo Shezi Is Mr Grand Durban 2020

Being a role model to his community, university and fellow class mates is a responsibility Lungelo Ngcobo-Shezi takes very seriously and what makes him tick.

The dapper fourth-year Financial Accounting student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) was over the moon when he clinched the title of Mr Grand Durban 2020, at Albany House in Durban, recently.

“I am so excited about my title, especially of the responsibility that it comes with being crowned Mr Grand Durban 2020. I believe that this is a golden opportunity for me to develop myself as a young person. No amount of words can ever describe how grateful I am to the organisers and the judges,” he said ecstatically.

For Shezi, it had always been his childhood dream to perform his modelling craft on a global stage. He admits he still has a long way to go terms of his modelling career, as his long-term dream is to be crowned Mr World in the near future. “I should be preparing myself for that day, who knows how close it can be,” chuckled Shezi.

Having amazing role models like Mr South Africa 2019, Nkululeko Mbatha, whose determination to see male pageants being recognised is quite humbling. “Also, my first role model is my grandfather Bishop Raymond Shezi, he is a visionary and a man of integrity, who I aspire to be like. In him I see the true essence of leadership, his love for the church and the community is motivating,” he said proudly.

Shezi stressed that the title he now has, means new duties for him. In its scope it will challenge him to reach out to young minds out there and play a role towards shaping a brighter future for all young people, who in todays’ society are faced with youth unemployment, social injustices and gender-based violence, to name but a few.

“As Mr Grand Durban I will be working closely with Miss Grand Durban and DUT’s Amahle Sithole, on community development projects. I hope we will soon be able to share with the public the initiatives we will be participating in as part of our reign,” he said.

His advice to students wishing to follow in his modelling footsteps is that proper preparation prevents poor performance. “Challenges do come your way, but believe in yourself and in your craft,” he said confidently.
