DUT’s Mental Health and Wellness Fair, A Success!

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) staff and students came out in numbers to attend the Mental Health and Wellness Fair that took place at Ritson Campus, last Wednesday, 17 April 2019.

The Student Counselling and Health Department of DUT hosted the annual Mental Health and Wellness Fair which was a tremendous success with a good attendance from staff and students.

Guest speakers at the event included Mr Phephelani Zondi, Ms Pirya Naidoo, Dr Lungisa Mlita and the DUT SRC president Mr Sesiyanda Godlimpi, who addressed the DUT staff and students on the various aspects regarding health care.

The purpose of the event was to promote health consciousness amongst staff and students and also to create awareness of the various health and wellness interventions available to both staff and students.

The South African National Blood Services were also in attendance and had a total of 35 donors.  Pink Drive also offered breast examinations and a total of 150 females and 10 male examinations were done at the event.

Lynette Chetty from DUT Student Counselling Health said, there were many other services that were available, like the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, SANCA, FAMSA, Citi Med Ambulance Services and the Epilepsy Foundation, to name but a few, that had made the event a success.

One of the speakers at the event, DUT SRC Social and Welfare Officer, Wendy Machi expressed her gratitude on the initiative the university was taking in assisting students with issues such as depression, knowing their HIV status, blood pressure and other medical conditions that students needed to be on alert about.
