The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is celebrating another proud research milestone after Professor Sheena Kumari was named a finalist in the 2026 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWISA).
Her recognition comes at a fitting time as South Africa celebrates the inaugural National Science Month throughout July. Led by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the month-long campaign celebrates the role of science, technology and innovation in improving lives, driving sustainable development and inspiring the next generation of scientists. Professor Kumari’s achievement reflects the important contribution that DUT researchers continue to make in advancing knowledge and finding solutions to real world challenges.
The South African Women in Science Awards are among the country’s most respected science awards, recognising women whose research is making a meaningful difference across a range of scientific disciplines. The awards also celebrate women who are breaking barriers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics while inspiring more young women to pursue careers in research and innovation.
Being named a finalist places Professor Kumari among some of South Africa’s leading women scientists and recognises the impact of her research and her contribution to scientific excellence.
Reflecting on the achievement, Professor Kumari expressed her gratitude to the University for its continued support. “I wish to convey my sincere appreciation to DUT and the University’s management for their continued support of my research endeavours and professional career,” she said.

As part of the awards programme, all finalists will take part in a professional profiling initiative where their research will be showcased through video interviews and photography. The profiles will be featured during the awards ceremony and shared across the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s communication platforms.
The winners of the 2026 South African Women in Science Awards will be announced during a gala ceremony hosted by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation on 20 August 2026 in Sandton, Gauteng.
Professor Kumari’s achievement is another proud moment for DUT and highlights the University’s growing research reputation. It also serves as an inspiration to young researchers, particularly women pursuing careers in science, showing how dedication, innovation and excellence can lead to national recognition.
