DUT’s Solar Truck A Great Attraction At Open Week

A mobile solar powered truck designed by the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Energy Technology Station had students amazed at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Open Week at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko Campus, yesterday.
Pupils from various schools were all eager to discover new ways to reuse energy like charging their cell phones to powering a refrigerator. DUT offers a variety of career paths and Engineering is a firm favourite amongst the visiting students.

The solar-powered truck is equipped with solar panels and wind turbines that power various appliances in the truck all in order to educate and promote the use of renewable energy. DUT’s Electrical Engineering student, Londiwe Sangweni said the students visiting at Open Week find the truck fascinating and have numerous questions. She added that the students that study Science in school can study Engineering, to focus more on renewable energy as it is part of their curriculum in High School.

“The aim is to create awareness amongst the urban and rural communities and educate people on the use of renewable energy and as well as promote Engineering as a whole which is being offered at DUT.
Mariannridge Secondary School pupil, Phumelela Sikhosana, found the mobile solar powered truck very interesting and is also very keen to study Engineering “The truck looks awesome, I have learnt a lot about it shows we do care about the environment. I would be very interested to study more about solar energy and Engineering as a career path I would like to take,” she said.
