DUT’S #VACCINATIONTHURSDAYS CAMPAIGN ALL SYSTEMS GO

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Isolempilo Clinic is open for vaccination against COVID-19 every Thursday. Global studies have shown that getting vaccinated is the single most important step in preventing COVID-19.

Taking advantage of the opportunity to get her booster shot against COVID-19 was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations at DUT, Dr Vuyo Mthethwa. She explained that one does not need to sit in one’s comfort zone.

“So, before anything untoward happens and you have to do it out of desperation, it’s better to just do it,” she said, referring to keeping up with one’s vaccination schedule.

Students and staff who would like to get vaccinated should contact the Clinic on 031 373 2223 to make an appointment. On the day of their appointment, vaccination candidates are asked to go to the Clinic on the Steve Biko campus with their ID, and student or staff card.

Chief Professional Nurse at the Isolempilo Clinic, Sister Sooriagandhi Wardthen, said: “We have reduced the number of days that we offer vaccinations at the Clinic to just one day of the week (Thursday) because the uptake of COVID-19 vaccinations has been slow recently. If demand increases, we will happily offer vaccination on other days. I also encourage staff and students to contact us by Wednesday morning to let us know that they require vaccines so that we order the correct number of doses, ensuring there is no wastage at the end of the day.”

Sr Wardthen added that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently reported a significant decrease in the number of people infected with COVID-19 and dying from the disease. However, she cautioned that some South African scientists anticipate a sixth wave of the pandemic in October.

Dr Mthethwa elaborated further: “If somebody like me with all sorts of challenges of time and pressure, if I can do it, everybody should. I also think most importantly it’s about the preservation of your own health and that is the most important reason why you should do it,” she stressed.

All staff and students are welcome to visit the Isolempilo Clinic for vaccination. For further information, please email covid-enquiries@dut.ac.za or call the Clinic on 031 373 2223.
