DUT’s Zindela Curates Prestigious Exhibition at the Absa Gallery

Marking his curatorial debut is Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Fine Art student Luyanda Zindela, who is currently curating an exhibition taking place at the Absa Gallery in Johannesburg until 26 January 2018.

The exhibition was inspired by Gerard Sekoto, a broadly recognised innovator of black South African art. In 2004, the Absa L’Atelier awards honoured the artist’s legacy by introducing the Gerard Sekoto award. It is an accolade bestowed on the most promising emerging artists to enter the annual competition. The award is presented in collaboration with the Alliance Française, the French Institute, French Embassy in South Africa and the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA).

The Absa Gallery brought together all the Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto award winners for the exhibition. The exhibition titled: ” A change in the Narrative”, explores the winning artists’ narratives through their work and reflective retellings of their thoughts and experiences since winning the Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto award. The exhibition is curated by Zindela, who won a merit award in 2014 as part of the Absa L’Atelier competition. He is currently studying towards his Masters in Technology Degree in Fine Art and feels honoured to have been given the opportunity to curate such a prestigious showing.

“Being presented with such a massive curatorial opportunity shows Absa’s continued value and support for the unearthing of young, creative, African talent through this competition. It also exemplifies Absa’s continued dedication to significantly investing in and nurturing the careers and narratives of the artists that emerge as a result of the competition,” said Zindela.
