DUT’s Zulu Clinches Gold and Aspires to Make It to the Olympics

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Thabile Zulu clinched the Gold medal in the Inter – Provincial Boxing Tournament which took place in Johannesburg early this month (March 2019).

The third year Business and Information Management student was representing KwaZulu – Natal under the 64 Kg category. She said this competition was very important as part of her preparation for the upcoming Elite National Championships that will take place in July 2019.

“I’ve been following a very strict training programme because I want to use this tournament as a platform to evaluate my state of readiness for the Elite National Championships. I’m thrilled to have won a gold medal in this inter-provincial tournament,” Zulu said excitedly.

The elated Zulu said the upcoming Elite National Championships is particularly important to her because she wants to make it to the South African Boxing Squad, and ultimately qualify to represent South Africa in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

“If I do well in the Elite National Championships, I stand a good chance to be selected to the South African Boxing Squad because it is my dream to compete in the upcoming Olympics games,” she said confidently.

The young female boxer said she fell in love with boxing while she was still in High School as a 15-year-old back in 2013. “One of my classmates in high school was a boxer, and she always used to come back with prizes from different tournaments. Her brother was her coach and one day they invited me to exercise with them – from that day onwards I’ve never looked back,” she added.

Since then, Zulu went on to win the gold medal in the 2013 SALGA Games where she was representing Umzinyathi District Municipality. In 2017 she won a gold medal in the first ever National Boxing League, which took place in East London. She also received a recognition award from the South African National Boxing Organisation (SANABO) in 2017, and she has been part of Team KZN since 2017 until now.
