After a demanding year filled with intense academic schedules, physical training, and final exams, the Department of Emergency Medical Care and Rescue at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) took time to breathe, unwind, and reconnect during their recent annual sports day event held at Curries Fountain in Durban.
The event was marked by high energy, enthusiasm and a strong spirit of unity, as students and staff came together for a day dedicated to teamwork, friendly competition, and well-deserved relaxation. Rooted firmly in DUT’s Living Values, the occasion reflected the principles of respect, excellence, integrity, and accountability, which remain central to the department’s culture.
The event aimed to promote togetherness, teamwork, and strengthened student–lecturer relationships, while offering an enjoyable break from academic pressures. Students from first year through to fourth year participated enthusiastically, embodying the Department’s core living values, through creative presentations, poetic recitals, and spirited war cries that showcased unity in diversity and mutual respect.
The activities featured football, volleyball, tug of war, the egg and spoon race, and relay events. These activities encouraged healthy competition, collaboration and resilience, with trophies and medals awarded to winning teams and individuals, in recognition of their excellence and commitment.
Fourth-year captain Sbongakonke Zondi highlighted the importance of these events for students who spend most of the year buried in academic work with little time to socialise. “This gives us the chance to breathe, reconnect, and enjoy ourselves,” Zondi said.
For third-year captain Ndumiso Mbeje, the day offered a meaningful escape. A moment to release the frustration and academic workload carried throughout the year. “This is the perfect time to relax and have fun together as a department,” he added.
Second-year captain Luvuyo Jonga emphasised the sense of unity fostered by the event. He said that Sports Day allowed them to understand each other and even their lecturers outside of the classroom. He believes the togetherness helps them to excel academically.
First year captain Simphiwe Dlamini highlighted that for first year students, the experience was especially valuable for team building and growth, inspired by senior students.
Department Secretary Mrs Leigh Meyers concluded by appreciating students and staff for showing up, not just to compete, but embracing the spirit of togetherness that defines the department.
