At just 22 years old, Samkelo Ngcobo, widely known among students as Mapholoba, has stepped into his new role as Organisation and Accommodation Officer of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
Born and raised in Empangeni, Ngcobo is currently pursuing a Diploma in Public Relations and Communication Management. Although he has not previously held major leadership positions, his natural ability to collaborate, understand student concerns, and offer thoughtful solutions has distinguished him among his peers. His journey reflects the belief that leadership is not defined by titles, but by intention, consistency, and a genuine willingness to serve.
Ngcobo’s interest in leadership developed from witnessing the everyday challenges students face, particularly regarding accommodation and student engagement. His passion for student welfare and his desire to create meaningful change have already earned him respect within the DUT community.
As Organisation and Accommodation Officer, he aims to strengthen collaboration between the SRC, student clubs, and societies, while advocating for improved, safe, and supportive living conditions for all students. He believes that a positive living environment plays a critical role in academic success and overall well-being.
“My role is to make sure students have access to living spaces that allow them to study comfortably and feel at home. A positive living environment influences how well students cope, perform academically, and enjoy their university experience,” Ngcobo shared.
Describing himself as driven, forward-thinking, and approachable, Ngcobo has demonstrated strong teamwork skills, clear thinking, and an open-minded approach to problem-solving. He believes that true leadership begins with listening.
“I see leadership as working with students, not above them. The voices of the student body guide everything I do,” he explained.
As part of the 2025/27 SRC leadership team, Samkelo hopes to contribute to a council that is more connected, responsive, and impactful. He plans to champion programmes and initiatives that make student life more engaging, supportive, and academically empowering.
“I deeply resonate with the DUT living value of Respect and Integrity. It reminds me to treat every student with dignity and fairness, especially in a diverse residence environment, and to uphold honesty in all my responsibilities as an Organization and Accommodation Officer,” said Ngcobo.
He stated that to ensure accommodation is safe and supportive, he conducts regular check-ins with house committees to encourage open communication and works closely with them to address concerns promptly. He further stated that he emphasises the importance of academic programmes in residences, ensures that security guards have compliance certificates, and encourages safety drills within residences to promote preparedness and security.
He further explained that residence inspections are ongoing and that he is satisfied with the overall progress, as he is guided by established norms and standards. He acknowledged that there are still areas requiring improvement, such as maintenance and compliance, but stated that he is generally pleased with what he has observed and will continue to strive for higher standards.
With his thoughtful nature, dedication to student welfare, and sincere commitment to meaningful change, Samkelo Ngcobo is poised to play a significant role in shaping a better university experience for students at DUT.
