From 6 July, until 10 July 2026, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is rolling out the Mahlabathini Science Week 2026, an initiative led by the Community Engagement Office in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry as part of the University’s National Science Month 2026 programme.
The initiative is bringing practical science demonstrations aligned with the CAPS curriculum to Grade 12 learners from 50 schools across the Mahlabathini Circuit Management Centre in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Over five days, the DUT team will visit school clusters, providing learners with engaging, hands-on science experiences that strengthen their understanding of key scientific concepts and inspire future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Through initiatives such as Mahlabathini Science Week, DUT continues to demonstrate its commitment to community engagement by expanding access to quality science education, empowering rural learners and inspiring the next generation of scientists, innovators and problem-solvers.
Day one kicked off with the team going to Bantubaningi High School, Magqezulana High School and Mnyamana High School, where Grade 12 Physical Sciences learners participated in exciting, hands-on science experiments designed to bring classroom concepts to life.
Through interactive demonstrations and practical learning experiences, learners had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Physical Sciences while exploring the fascinating world of scientific discovery. The initiative not only supports teaching and learning but also inspires learners to pursue studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The excitement continued on Day two of the Mahlabathini Science Week 2026 as the Durban University of Technology welcomed another group of Grade 12 learners as part of the University’s National Science Month programme.
Learners from Bhekifa High School, Dikana High School, Ekudubekeni High School, Vukuza High School, Joko High School and Masibumbane High School immersed themselves in practical Physical Sciences and Chemistry activities that transformed classroom concepts into real life discoveries. Through interactive experiments and engaging demonstrations, science became something to explore, experience and enjoy.
By creating meaningful learning experiences beyond the textbook, DUT is nurturing curiosity, building confidence and encouraging more young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The future of STEM begins with opportunities like these.
