ENGINEERING HOPE IN THE QUEST FOR A GREENER TOMORROW

ENGINEERING HOPE IN THE QUEST FOR A GREENER TOMORROW

From the rolling hills of Nongoma to the laboratories of the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Sakhile Cebekhulu’s journey into Chemical Engineering is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and purpose.

Inspired by his rural upbringing, where innovation was not just a concept but a necessity for economic growth and improved living conditions, Sakhile set out to become a problem-solver, committed to making a difference.

Choosing DUT as the launchpad for his career was a strategic decision. The university is renowned for its hands-on, industry-aligned education and is located in Durban, a thriving hub for industrial innovation. This environment provided Sakhile with the ideal setting to cultivate both his academic and professional aspirations. He completed his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and went on to earn his Honours qualification in 2025.

Currently, Sakhile is completing a 12-month internship at DUT, where he is immersed in cutting-edge research focused on wastewater treatment using Magnetic Separation Technology. This practical experience has allowed him to apply simulation software, design projects, and explore real-world solutions to pressing environmental issues. His contributions to the Green Engineering Research Group further highlight his commitment to innovation with purpose.

However, Sakhile’s journey is not limited to the lab. A firm believer in holistic development, he has expanded his horizons by completing a Mandarin course and earning a Certificate of Merit in Project Management. He has also served as a tutor for two modules, demonstrating his passion for knowledge-sharing and his dedication to uplifting others.

A defining moment in his academic career occurred during the Faculty Research Day, when Sakhile’s poster presentation on biodiesel production earned top honours. His project, which creatively used vegetable oils and avocado peels, showed his ability to merge scientific knowledge with sustainable innovation. It also sparked a deeper interest in alternative energy and the role it can play in building a greener, more equitable future.

Sakhile’s vision extends far beyond personal success. He dreams of using his skills to drive sustainable technologies, improve access to clean resources, and mentor young people, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, in STEM fields. He aims to obtain professional certification, grow his network of like-minded changemakers, and lead community-based projects that harness the power of renewable energy for social good.

His journey, marked by academic excellence, innovative thinking, and a heart for service, serves as an inspiration to aspiring engineers across the country. Sakhile is more than just a chemical engineer, he is a catalyst for change, engineering a future where sustainability, equity, and progress go hand in hand.
