He has a developing interest in the Digital Humanities (DH) which is a newly emerging area of interest in both Japan and South Africa.

Summary

The presentation provides an introduction to Digital Humanities (DH) and its recent emergence around the world—in some countries earlier and more rapidly than others. The definition of DH is contested, as is the issue of whether it constitutes a newly emerging field or rather a transformation of all fields within the humanities, but the presentation attempts to non-emphatically elaborate the kinds of activities which would be considered part of its current expression. The presentation also highlights the prospects that DH has for offering enhanced points of connection between pedagogy and research in humanities-related faculties and departments. Finally, the issue of how DH could transform our notion of what constitutes research, research capacity and research output is discussed, particularly in light of the challenges presented for the metrics used to evaluate such.
