The UFC@DUT will be running its 16th seminar on Thursday, the 16th of July.

Topic: “Where are You Allowed to Participate”

Presenter:  Vaughn Sadie

Venue: ESBE Boardroom, L3, S4, S block, Steve Biko Campus – Entrance from Gate 2.

About the Presentation

learning from the opposite pole, is a research project that aims to develop cross-continental exchanges between organizations and several individuals that have an interest in public art, public participatory practice and cultural management. The comparative cross-continental exchange is between Scotland and South Africa.

The hope is that this process will develop relationships, which will strength amongst key stakeholders over the next three years.

With all active stakeholders the context and process of “Revolution Room” is shared as way of reflection.  Revolution Room is a Public participatory art project that explores new ways in which artist lead projects and organisations can mediate and reflect on their processes in the public realm. In each context we engage in an active exchange with the organisation and the residents in the selected areas that have participated in the process. This reflexive process is ultimately used to reframe and rethink the role of community lead public art projects in a South African context.

In this seminar I will be sharing some initial findings of this exchange, as well as examining a specific emergent issue, namely the homogeneity of social and economic landscape in Scotland and how that impacts public participation compared to similar processes in South Africa, where social and economic systems are grossly heterogeneous.

About the Presenter

Vaughn Sadie is a conceptual artist and educator, living and working in Johannesburg. He completed his MFA in 2009 and is currently registered in the PhD Programme at the Urban Futures Centre at the Durban University of Technology. Since 2010, Vaughn has become increasingly interested in the role that artificial light has on our perception and construction of the spaces we occupy. In response he has worked collaboratively with Sello Pesa, Jay Pather and Neil Coppen on various projects, through site-specific work and participatory practice, to develop alternative way of perceiving and engaging with a city.

This project has been supported by the SA-UK Seasons 2014 & 2015, a partnership
between the Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa and the British Council.
