About the Presentation
Background: The Lancet, in a recent report implicated climate change as the “biggest global health threat of the 21st century”, defining climate change as a “health issue” and not just an environmental issue. The health sector paradoxically contributes significantly to global environmental problems through the products and technologies it deploys, the resources it consumes and the waste it generates, making it an unintentional contributor to factors that undermine public health.
Objectives & Method: GGHH aims to evolve the “Hippocratic Oath”, first do no harm beyond the immediacy of doctor patient relationship to a more global vision of health that also considers the health of the community and the environment that supports it. GGHH builds on good work happening globally and engenders an approach to sustainability and health that can be replicated by thousands of diverse hospitals and health systems globally. The GGHH Agenda, consisting of 10 interconnected goals, provides a comprehensive framework for the health sector to achieve greater sustainability and improved public health. Hospitals and health systems globally are encouraged to sign up to GGHH, and commit to a minimum of two goals. The goals include issues such as Leadership, Water and Energy Efficiency, Waste and Hazardous Chemical Management.
Results & Conclusion: GGHH has created a global learning community of hospitals, health systems, and health organizations dedicated to sustainability and environmental health. Members benefit from GGHH tools, resources, and experts to benchmark, track their progress, achieve their goals and share their successes. The health sector needs to take a leadership role in transforming itself and changing its practice so that it can become a force of greater healing to the environment that sustains us all.
