About the Presentation
Raymond will reflect on the role of faith traditions in the life of cities drawing on his previous experiences of living in London, New York and Johannesburg. He will explore specifically what role religions and spirituality have to offer in the regeneration of Durban and what resources they can bring to the table. He will invite people to reflect on their own spiritual experiences and explore what means we can use to work more effectively with Faith-based organisations.
About the Presenter
Raymond holds an MA in Philosophy and Theology from New College, Oxford, an MA in Philosophy from the University of London, and an MSc in Human Rights from the London School of Economics. He speaks French, Italian, Spanish and German and is a frequent writer and commentator in newspapers, radio and television. For 6 years, Raymond was a trainee Jesuit Priest. This included 2 years living and working in a refugee camp in Uganda as Project Director for the Jesuit Refugee Service serving 60,000 Sudanese refugees with pastoral support and education. After leaving the Jesuits, Raymond became the Head of Communities for CAFOD, a leading UK Catholic NGO which raises c. $80 million per year for development and emergency relief. For 5 years before this, Raymond was Director of the Jesuit Institute – South Africa, working with a team of lay people and Jesuit priests to bring a faith perspective to debates on social issues and to lead adult formation programmes. In this work, he partnered with the National School of Government, several national and international business schools and the Origins Centre of Wits University and also convened the Hope&Joy Network which brought together a range of almost 50 Catholic organisations. In 2015, Raymond was appointed by Cardinal Napier as the firstDirector of Denis Hurley Centre- brand new community centre in the heart of durban working with different faith groups to help the poor and marginalised of the city. This landmark building has very quickly established its reputation with the city as a place of care, education and community, responding in particular to the xenophobia crisis and to the issues of drug addiction and homelessness.
