The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted its highly anticipated second annual Sports Day at Curries Fountain Stadium. The event was a celebration of teamwork, healthy competition, and community within the faculty.
The day began with a welcome address by the Deputy Dean, Professor Matthys Swanepoel, who emphasised the importance of striking a balance between academic excellence and physical well-being. He explained that events like the Sports Day not only foster social cohesion among students and staff but also build leadership, discipline, and teamwork skills essential in both academic and professional environments.
“This Sports Day is more than just a day of games and fun, it’s a day to strengthen our sense of community, celebrate our diversity, and remind ourselves that collaboration and perseverance are key, whether on the sports field or in the classroom,” said Prof Swanepoel.
The event featured a variety of sporting activities, from soccer, chess, and netball to fun relay races and tug-of-war challenges. Students and staff enthusiastically participated, showcasing their athletic skills and team spirit. Friendly rivalries between departments added excitement and energy to the day, while cheering crowds created an electric atmosphere.
Beyond the competition, the Sports Day also offered a platform for networking and relationship-building, breaking down barriers between students, lecturers, and administrative staff. It reinforced the faculty’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates who value physical fitness, teamwork, and resilience alongside academic achievement.
The second Annual Sports Day concluded with prize-giving ceremonies, where outstanding teams and individual performances were recognised. The event was a resounding success, leaving participants eager for next year’s edition.
