FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES WELCOMES NEW POSTGRADUATE COHORT AT 2025 ORIENTATION

The Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially opened the 2025 academic year with a postgraduate orientation on Tuesday, 11 June 2025. The event, held at Mansfield Hall on the Ritson Campus, welcomed a new cohort of Master’s and Doctoral students, along with postdoctoral research fellows from across Southern Africa, Nigeria and India.

The orientation marked the beginning of a critical academic journey for students entering research-intensive programmes across biotechnology, food and nutrition, chemistry, physics and maritime studies.

Executive Dean of the Faculty, Professor Suren Singh, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the essential role of postgraduate research in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. From climate change and global health to food security and sustainable development, Singh highlighted how applied sciences remain central to advancing real-world solutions.

“This journey is about more than degrees. It’s about producing research that contributes meaningfully to society,” said Professor Singh. He also addressed the rigour of postgraduate studies and reaffirmed the Faculty’s commitment to supporting student success through its academic ecosystem. The orientation featured strategic inputs from the Faculty’s research support team, including academic coordinators, research administrators and the subject librarian. Presenters outlined DUT’s postgraduate structures, processes and expectations, ensuring students understood the systems in place to support their academic progress.

Deputy Dean, Professor Tukayi Kudanga, encouraged students to build interdisciplinary networks and engage actively in research communities through seminars and collaborative projects.

“Research does not happen in isolation. Your next big idea could emerge from a conversation with a colleague outside your discipline,” said Professor Kudanga.

Adding a personal dimension to the programme, Professor Singh shared reflections on his own doctoral journey and the challenges of early research life. His story provided a candid and inspiring account that many in the room could relate to, especially those preparing for publication, presentations and progress reviews.

The Faculty also recognised the contribution of Professor Bala Pillay, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and now a consultant for the Faculty’s Fast Track Project. His involvement reflects DUT’s continued investment in strengthening postgraduate supervision, throughput and academic mentorship.

The orientation concluded with a group photo and networking lunch, reinforcing the Faculty’s culture of collaboration and academic community-building.

As DUT continues to position itself as a hub of research and innovation under ENVISION2030, the Faculty of Applied Sciences remains committed to advancing postgraduate excellence, developing future scholars and supporting research that drives societal progress.
