Miracle and Mystery and the Embodiment of Hope

Miracle and Mystery and the Embodiment of Hope

Giving ‘life’ to their dynamic range, 19 DUT Fashion and Textile students received thunderous applaud at the University’s Annual Fashion Show 2015 for their dynamic ‘incarnation’ themed garments showcased at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko Campus, yesterday (Wednesday, 30 September).

The Show ends on Friday, 2 October 2015, with a grand finale where the winners will be announced.

The 19 designs showcased on day one form part of the overall 38 collections which will be on show this year. The best 20 ranges will be featured at the final showing on day three (Friday, 2 October 2015).

The word “incarnation” is derived from the Latin word incarnates which means ‘to make flesh’.

“Incarnation involves miracles, mystery and the embodiment of hope. The students’ inspirations were drawn from the global environment and their interpretation of the theme led them on a journey of self discovery. The students were tasked with putting together a collection of seven fully accessorised outfits that are reflective of their personal development, style and character. All the ranges are diverse, innovative and visually creative,” said Head of Department (Fashion and Textiles), Sunthra Moodley.

The avant-garde creations reflected the third-year students’ views on South Africa’s democracy, giving a visual voice to the symbolic, colourful range. The garments expressed the students’ dedication to articulating their thoughts through the three-dimensional form.

Providing garments through sheer fantasy and imagination was the stunning children range from Paige-Marie Garbutt. Her range entailed gorgeous Red Riding Hood type hoods for kids with adorable soft, flowing dresses for young girls.

Tasneen Desai’s range of white with dye-tie colour imprints on her casual range impressed the audiences.

Giving a more dark meaning and feel to his range was Xander Cox whose garments were basically an interpretation of fashion fetish for seven deadly sins.

Audiences could not get enough of Lindo Philani’s shiny, sequined, sexy range depicting the physical and chemical reactions in the Milky Way galaxy.

Also wowing the audiences was Emmanuel Sikakane’s bright, orange and yellow menswear garments depicting street monk wear, also resembling peace and love.

This year’s panel of judges includes established designers from the local fashion industry. Sponsored prizes will be awarded to the best designers in the categories of Most Innovative Range, Best Range on Show, Most Commercial Range, Best Menswear Range and Best Technical Student on Friday, 2 October 2015.

Tickets cost R50.00 per person and are still available at Computicket.
