The Department of Visual Communications Design at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently held its annual third-year Bachelor of Applied Arts in Commercial Photography Exhibition themed “Focal Point: Where Art and Reality Meet” at the ML Sultan Campus in Durban.
The exhibition drew its theme from fundamental principles of photography, centering on the idea of a focal point and carrying out a dual meaning that represents both a technical term in photographic practice.
Parents, lectures and fellow students came in their numbers to witness the fascinating craft exhibited by third years.
Applied Photographic Techniques Lecturer, Liza du Plessis said that this exhibition could not have happened without all the staff and students.
“The students took hold of the exhibition, and they made it their own. They learned a lot of good skills, how to draw, measure and cut. Each student was responsible for their own work and then on top of that the students have also done a photo book for everybody to see,’’ said du Plessis.
She further expressed how proud she is of her third-year students for what they have achieved.
“I feel immense and with sense of pride to see what they have become. From first year where they did not even know how to hold a camera to produce this outstanding work. I am certain that indeed they going to change the world of photography,’’ he added.
Philisiwe Ntobela one of the exhibiters elaborated that her work was conveyed through conceptual photography reflecting on all emotions that she has been through.
“My work was reflecting more on my feelings, emotions and all the challenges that I have been through to get where I am today. This was a great opportunity for me and to see my parents here today made me happy,’’ said Ntobela.
Philisiwe’s father Thulisizwe Ntobela expressed how proud he is for his daughter for what she has done for herself.
“I am very proud and happy for my daughter. Seeing all this just took me back where we came for enrollment, I never thought this moment will come,’’ said Ntobela.
