The Department of Financial Accounting at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted a Real-Life Accounting Case Study Workshop at the Capital Pearls Hotel in Umhlanga. The event provided students with a unique opportunity to prepare for the transition from university into the professional world of accounting.
Discussions focused on essential aspects of the profession, including annual financial preparation, taxation, review engagements, and the audit process. Real-world challenges and the importance of ethics were also highlighted. Motivational insights encouraged students to carry their strong theoretical foundation into practice with integrity and resilience. The workshop was carefully designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
The aim of the workshop was to help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills necessary for success in the accounting field. Its interactive approach promoted collaboration, teamwork, and knowledge-sharing in a dynamic learning environment.
Programme Director Mr Brian Jiyane, the Teaching and Learning Development Practitioner for the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics under the Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), set the tone for the event by fostering an engaging environment that encouraged progressive interaction and meaningful discussions among participants.
Delivering the welcome address, Financial Accounting Lecturer and the ECP Programme Co-Ordinator Ms Nolwando Mgilane urged students to fully participate, ask questions, and embrace the opportunity to learn. She noted that the workshop came at the perfect time, as the knowledge and skills gained would carry them into their future careers.
“On behalf of the Financial Accounting Department, it is my absolute pleasure to welcome you all to our ECP Workshop: Real-Life Accounting Case Study. Today marks an important milestone in your academic journey, as you prepare to transition from being students into professionals who will shape the future of the accounting field. This workshop has been carefully designed to give you not only technical knowledge but also practical insights into real-world challenges, bridging the gap between theory and practice. It is our hope that the lessons shared today will empower you to step into your careers with confidence, resilience, and purpose,” she said.
Ms Mgilane also expressed her sincere gratitude to the Head of Department, Professor Ferina Marimuthu, for her unwavering support, belief in the team, and trust in their ability to drive the program forward. She further acknowledged the ECP team; Mr Jwara, Mr Zungu, Mr Mncwabe, and the departmental secretary Mr Mthembu for their continuous support and commitment to the success of the department.
The keynote address was delivered by Mr Sthunywa Nkwanyana, an industry expert with more than ten years of experience in auditing, financial management, and governance.
