The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) recently hosted the third edition of its annual FMS Sports Day bringing students, staff and stakeholders together for a day of sport, entertainment and social cohesion.
The event, which was established in 2024, featured a range of sporting codes including football, volleyball, athletics, tug-of-war, chess, mlabalaba and aerobics. This year, the programme was expanded to include the FMS Biggest Stage talent search, providing students with an opportunity to showcase their creative talents through performances such as dancing, singing and acting.
Speaking on behalf of the FMS Sports Day organising committee, Faculty of Management Sciences marketing practitioner Zinhle Rashee said the introduction of the talent search was aimed at making the event more inclusive.
“It’s a social cohesion sporting event. The FMS SD Organising Committee realised that the 2026 Annual FMS SD can bring more than just sporting codes. We introduced a grand platform for a talent search for FMS Biggest Stage,” Rashee said.
She said the event continued to grow through increased collaboration and support from the DUT community.
The annual event also strengthened the Faculty’s partnership with AmaZulu Football Club, which supported the initiative as a partner. AmaZulu FC Public Relations Officer Philani Ndlela said the club valued its involvement in the DUT community.
“We are a community-oriented football club, so being part of the DUT community gives us a more defined sense of belonging,” said Ndlela.
He highlighted the support from students as one of the memorable aspects of the partnership and the sports day.
“When you are being cheered on, you tend to excel and strive to do better than your best,” he said.
The FMS Sports Day continues to provide a platform for students and staff to connect outside the classroom and workplace, while promoting participation, healthy competition, creativity and a sense of community across the Faculty.
