Autumn Graduation
Ceremonies 2024
World University Rankings - Top 600

The 2021/22 former President of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Student Representative Council (SRC), Sibusiso Gumede was amongst the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics graduates who were honoured for their academic excellence at the DUT Autumn Graduation ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre this afternoon (25 May 2023).

Gumede (25) originally from Dududu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Coast but now residing at Folweni, graduated with his Postgraduate Diploma in Taxation. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Accounting at DUT.

His passion for Accounting dates back to his high school years at Ntwenhle High School when he was given an opportunity to tutor Accounting to his classmates from Grade 10 to matric. Gumede claims that there were times where at school, they didn’t have an Accounting teacher and he had to step in and share his knowledge with his peers.

He is currently completing his internship at the DUT Financial Accounting Research Office and he is grateful for the opportunity to acquire work skills and adjust to the work environment.

Being on the other side as an employee of the university makes Gumede to be able to relate better with the students.

“It is easier for me to engage with the students as I understand where they come from. I am able to give feedback based on my experience. During this year’s registration, I was deployed to be part of the registration team to minimise problems during registration. It helped as we were there to ensure the smooth transitioning of messages between staff and students,” said Gumede.

According to Gumede, juggling work and studying was tough and loadshedding maked it even worse for him.

“Lead students with dignity in all possible ways. Ensure that there is proper communication between you, students and management. While fighting for the student issues, do not forget that you have a qualification to complete. Remember that being an SRC is only for a specific term, meanwhile your qualification is for a lifetime,” said Gumede advising the current SRC.

Gumede extended his gratitude to his mother, Ms Thulisile Gumede, former SRC, Dr Lulu Jali from the Taxation department who also played a parental role to him. His special thanks also went out to Professor Oludayo Olugbara, Executive Dean: Faculty of Accounting and Informatics and DUT Registrar, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane for their continuous support in his academic career.
