The former Student Representative Council (SRC) Secretary-General at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Joyful Gcabashe bagged his second qualification, an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration at the DUT 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony, which was held at the Indumiso campus, Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 14 May 2024.
Gcabashe (27) from Umlazi served as the SRC Secretary General during the term 2022/23. It was during this term where he awarded his Diploma in Accounting under the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics.
This time around he has opted for a slight change from his previous qualification, venturing into the Business Administration field.
“I am eager to continue my studies and enhance my academic knowledge. As I mentioned before, I aspire to obtain a PhD, a goal that would have made my late father proud. My father was a teacher by profession, and he was passionate about education. I plan to continue making him proud and I so wish he was still alive to see how far I have come. I am committed to pursuing further education whenever the opportunity arises, as I firmly believe that the sky is the limit,” shared Gcabashe.
Sharing his advice to the current SRC members, Gcabashe said they need to understand that leadership was not defined by comparison, as many may tend to believe, but by the enduring impact long after their term concludes. He emphasised the importance of making the right decision rather than the popular ones.
“Popularity is fleeting, but sustainable actions will earn you praise from those who may never even know your face, years after your term has ended. Be brave, and honest at all times,” advised Gcabashe.
Commenting on his future plans, Gcabashe said: “At this point, my future plans cannot be outlined as a definitive blueprint, as they remain a work in progress. However, one thing is certain: I intend to continue contributing to the transformation of DUT and to establish myself as a distinguished brand and alumnus.”
