FORMER DUT SRC SECRETARY-GENERAL SAYS LEADERSHIP ROLE  HAS EQUIPPED HIM WITH VALUABLE LEADERSHIP AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS

Former Student Representative Council (SRC) Secretary-General at the Durban University of Technology, Tshabalala Melusi proudly received his first qualification, a Diploma in Tourism, during the 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony held at the Indumiso Campus Hall in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 12 May 2026.

Originally from Mpumalanga, the 25-year-old served as DUT SRC Secretary-General from 2023 to 2025, balancing student leadership responsibilities while pursuing his studies.

Melusi’s journey at DUT began in 2022, and by his second year, he had already been elected into the SRC. Reflecting on his leadership journey, he shared that serving as student leader equipped him with valuable leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that he will carry throughout his life.

“One of the biggest challenges was learning how to balance academics and leadership responsibilities at the same time, being a student leader requires commitment because students depend on you, but I also had to make sure that I stayed focused on my studies,” he explained.

Passionate about helping others, Melusi said his role in the SRC allowed him to make a meaningful contribution to student life through various initiatives and events aimed at supporting and empowering students across the university.

He also credited his family for inspiring him to pursue higher education. Coming from a family with several graduates, Melusi said their achievements motivated him to work hard and remain determined throughout his academic journey.

“My family is very proud and happy about this achievement. Seeing them celebrate this milestone with me means a lot because they have always encouraged me to keep pushing forward,” he said.

Despite celebrating his qualification, Melusi is not stopping there. He is currently pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Ecotourism and hopes to continue with postgraduate studies in the near future.

Sharing advice with the current SRC leadership, Melusi encouraged student leaders to remain disciplined and never lose sight of their academic goals.

“Leadership is important, but education must always come first. Use your leadership positions to make a positive impact while also making sure you complete your qualification successfully,” he advised.
