At the 2026 Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Friday, 22 May 2026, Durban University of Technology celebrated the remarkable achievement of Mnqobi Victor Khayelihle Mzimela from Amanzimtoti, who graduated Cum Laude with a Dean’s Merit Award after completing his Master of Health Sciences in Homoeopathy.
Having completed both a Bachelor’s Honours Degree and a Master of Health Sciences in Homoeopathy at DUT, he now officially qualifies as a Homoeopathic Doctor. His Master’s research, titled “An in vitro study on the physiological actions of Carbolicum acidum 5Ch, 9CH, 15CH, 30CH, and 200CH on granulocytes and T-cell chemical mediators in cellular allergic responses,” focused on advancing understanding within the field of alternative medicine and allergic cellular responses.
For Victor, receiving the Cum Laude distinction and Dean’s Merit Award is both humbling and rewarding.
“It is fulfilling because when you are deeply focused on your work, you often forget to pause and reflect on how far you have come. Receiving this recognition is a powerful reminder that consistent effort and dedication do not go unnoticed,” he shared.
Beyond his own studies, Victor played an active role in supporting the development of fellow students throughout his time at DUT. For more than five years, he worked as an academic tutor within the Faculty of Health Sciences, assisting students across various medical modules. His passion for student support continues today through his role as a Mentor Advisor within the Faculty of Health Sciences Academic Development Unit, while also serving as a Residence Advisor.
Victor’s contribution to DUT extended beyond academics. Representing DUT Sports Administration at both provincial and national levels, he earned gold medals in Sports Fitness (Aerobics) and Dance Sport, showcasing his commitment to excellence in every aspect of university life.
Despite his achievements, Victor’s journey was not without challenges. Financial difficulties posed a significant obstacle during his studies, but support from the IQRAA Trust during his undergraduate years helped him continue pursuing his academic goals.
“I am deeply grateful for the support I received because it made it possible for me to pursue postgraduate studies,” he said.
Victor says the DUT values that resonate most with him are respect and integrity, principles that guide both his personal and professional life. He also values compassion and excellence, especially in his work as a healthcare practitioner and mentor. Last year, his commitment to these values was recognised when he received an award from Executive Dean Professor Gugu Mchunu for embodying the DUT living value of Excellence.
His family celebrated the achievement with immense pride. Although Victor’s mother was overjoyed when he shared the news of his graduation, she was not surprised. She had always believed in his abilities and knew that he was destined to succeed.
“She was very happy and proud, but not surprised at all, because she knew I was going to make it,” he shared.
Victor’s passion for Homoeopathy began after his time at MEDUNSA, now known as Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, where he became increasingly interested in alternative medicine and holistic healthcare approaches.
Looking ahead, Victor is already preparing for the next chapter of his academic journey. He is currently in the process of registering for a PhD in Health Sciences at DUT, with the goal of contributing further to research and academic development.
His long-term career ambitions include entering clinical practice as a Homoeopathic Doctor while continuing to support students and contribute to academia.
Reflecting on his journey, Victor encourages first-year students to remain focused on their goals and make use of the support systems available to them.
“The habit that has kept me going is begin with the end in mind. Keep your dreams in focus and continue working towards them, especially during difficult times. Pause when necessary, but remain committed to moving forward,” he advised.
