GAGASI FM PRESENTER OVERCOME MULTIPLE TRADEGIES TO EARN HIS HONOURS IN JOURNALISM

Menelisi Ndwandwe, a Talk Show presenter at Gagasi FM, has overcome multiple personal tragedies to obtain his Bachelor of Journalism Honours Degree at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Autumn Graduation Ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban on Thursday, 22 May 2026.

Born in KwaNongoma his journey was far from easy. In 2024, shortly after enrolling for his honours degree, Menelisi lost his uncle, mother, and grandmother within the space of three months.

The losses took a severe emotional and mental toll on him, making it difficult to cope both personally and academically. As the results he had to finish his research module the following year (2025).

Despite the challenges, he refused to give up and sought support from DUT’s Student Counselling Services to help him navigate one of the most painful periods of his life.

“It was very tough for me. Mentally, I was not coping. Losing three family members, including my mother was a devastating period in my life. But here I am, standing tall,” he said.

Balancing demanding work schedules with academic responsibilities also proved challenging. However, with the support of his family, friends and the management team at Gagasi FM, he was able to persevere and successfully complete his studies.

He also expressed his gratitude to Vuma FM for believing in his talent at a young age and giving him an opportunity when he was just 24 years old.

“Most importantly, I want to thank myself because it was not easy,” he said.

Menelisi also paid tribute to his father, siblings especially his late mother, for the role they played in shaping his life and supporting his dreams.

“I will forever cherish my mother for everything she did for me. I also want to acknowledge my father, who played a significant role in my life,” he said.

Menelisi said this is just a beginning and there is a lot to come. He is aiming for his  masters and eventually PhD degrees.
