Gearing Up Students for Higher Education

The Faculty of Management Sciences recently hosted its orientation day for first year Hospitality, Catering and Hotel Management students.

The orientation was more about educating, empowering and enriching young minds with the wealth of knowledge about the career path that they have chosen and also letting them know about the career opportunities that they can explore after completion.

The room was filled with fresh faces beaming with hope and curiosity as they were now embarking on a new chapter of their lives. The beginning of adulthood and the dawn of a better life.

Esteemed guest Professor Burkhard von Freyberg from the Munich University of Applied Sciences in Germany shared some his travel experiences with the students and encouraged them to look beyond their circumstances in order to be successful in life. He also placed great emphasis on the wonderful opportunity the exchange programme offers. “The hospitality industry is filled with many opportunities, therefore, one should always thrive to work hard, be committed and ooze dedication. Africa is a beautiful continent that has so many amazing tourist attractions and it also needs creative minds that are eager to grow and learn,” said he said.

First year Catering Management student Ntuthuko Jali who was inspired by renowned chef Jamie Oliver to purse his dreams could not contain his excitement as being accepted into the course is a dream come true for him. “I want to be the best chef this country has ever had wjo will specialise in authentic African cuisine”, said Jali.

“It was a great pleasure to see students in full uniform,” said Head of Department Doctor Erasmus Mguni. “This is very important for us because it is the intention of the department to teach our students about the culture of the Tourism and Hospitality industry from the onset. This department strives to produce graduates who understand the values of hard work, honesty, justice, fairness and accountability just to mention but a few,” he said.
