Thamsanqa Zungu (21) graduated Cum Laude for his Bachelor’s degree in Information and Communications Technology at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony which took place at the Olive Convention Centre on Thursday, 23 May 2024.
The 21-year-old from kwaNongoma, oSuthu, eHlalankosi in KwaZulu Natal, was over the moon as his hard work and determination had finally paid off.
“Graduating Cum Laude was truly an honour and a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve invested in my academic journey. It was incredibly rewarding to see my efforts recognised and celebrated in this manner. Achieving Cum Laude signified not only academic excellence but also a commitment to learning, growth, and perseverance,” he said.
Zungu extended his many thanks to his family, friends and professors for the support and highlighted that the achievement motivated him to continue striving for excellence.
He further explained that the challenges he encountered tested his resilience and passion.
“The pressure to cover expenses while staying focused on my studies sometimes felt overwhelming. I had to constantly weigh the costs of essential academic materials against other necessities, groceries, and transportation. At times, I found myself juggling part-time jobs. Furthermore, the challenge was academic pressure. The rigorous coursework and high expectations sometimes led to stress and anxiety, especially during exam periods or when facing demanding assignments,” he added.
Despite these challenges, he remained determined and learned to manage stress effectively while seeking support when needed.
He aims to gain valuable experience and expertise in various domains within IT, such as software development, cybersecurity, data analytics, or network administration
He is currently focused on his studies as he is pursuing his Honour’s degree in Information and Communications Technology and conducting research in specific areas of interest (Machine Learning).
For a first-year student looking to embark on a career in IT, Zungu said: “Focus on building a strong foundation of technical skills and knowledge through coursework, hands-on projects, and practical experience. Stay curious and keep learning, as the field of IT is constantly evolving. Networking is also crucial, so try to connect with professionals in the industry, seek mentorship, and join relevant communities. Be persistent, resilient, and proactive in pursuing your goals, and start building your portfolio early to showcase your skills and achievements. By following these tips and staying dedicated to your aspirations, you can set yourself on the path to a rewarding career in IT.”
