“Graduating is not the end of my journey but the beginning of a new chapter. With the foundation I have built at DUT, I am excited to continue learning, growing, and contributing to society,” expressed graduand, Awande Ngubane.
The 21-year-old, Awande Ngubane, who currently resides in South Beach, Durban, is ecstatic after graduating at the DUT 2026 Spring Gradution ceremony with his National Diploma in Public Administration (Public Management) at the Olive Convention Centre.
For Awande, his graduation is not only a milestone that represents his academic achievement but also his personal growth, resilience, and the unwavering support of his family.
“When I first enrolled at DUT, I was motivated by a deep interest in governance and the role that public institutions play in serving communities. Public Administration appealed to me because it combines theory with practical skills that are essential for effective service delivery,” he relayed.
Over the course of his studies, Awande was exposed to modules that broadened his understanding of administration, policy, and management.
“These subjects challenged me to think critically about how government systems operate and how they can be improved to better meet the needs of citizens,” he added.
Speaking of his long but fruitful journey, Awande indicated that it was not without obstacles. Like many students, he had to learn how to balance academic responsibilities with personal commitments.
“Adjusting to the demands of higher education required discipline and perseverance. There were moments when deadlines felt overwhelming, and the workload seemed unmanageable. However, I discovered that asking for help, staying focused, and reminding myself of my long term goals were powerful strategies for overcoming these challenges,” he humbly shared.
His experience at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, where he had applied his knowledge in a real world environment, further strengthened his confidence and gave him practical insight into the importance of integrity and excellence in public service.
“Graduating with my Diploma is a moment of immense pride. It symbolises years of sacrifice, determination, and growth. For me, this achievement is not just about receiving a qualification; it is about proving to myself that commitment and resilience can turn aspirations into reality,” emphasised Awande.
Also, sharing in his triumph, his family’s reaction to the news was deeply emotional. They have been his pillars of strength throughout this journey, offering encouragement during difficult times and celebrating every small victory along the way.
“Seeing their joy reminded me that this accomplishment belongs to all of us, it is a shared success built on love and support,” he explained.
Among DUT’s values, Awande most strongly identifies with is excellence and integrity. “Excellence reflects the standard I strive to uphold in my academic work and future career. It is about consistently delivering quality, whether in assignments, projects, or professional responsibilities. Integrity, on the other hand, is the foundation of trust,” he explained.
During his time at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, he learned that even small tasks such as filing or data capturing requires honesty and reliability.
“Upholding integrity ensures that public institutions remain accountable and that communities can rely on the services provided to them,” indicated Awande.
Looking ahead, he plans to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Public Management which will allow him to deepen his knowledge, expand his career opportunities, and position himself for leadership roles in the public sector.
“My aim is to work in administration or management within government, where I can contribute to improving service delivery and ensuring that communities receive the support they deserve. Over time, I hope to grow into a leadership position where I can influence policy and drive initiatives that make a tangible difference in people’s lives,” he added.
To first year students beginning their journey at DUT, his advice is simple yet powerful.
“Do not be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance when you feel uncertain. University is not only about earning a degree; it is also about building a strong work ethic, developing relationships, and learning how to navigate challenges. Every obstacle you face is an opportunity to grow, and every success is a reminder of your potential,” he stressed.
As Awande reflects on his journey, he is filled with gratitude. “I am thankful to my lecturers, who guided me with patience and expertise, and to my family, whose unwavering support made this achievement possible. I am also grateful to DUT for providing an environment that nurtured my growth and prepared me for the future. My practical experience at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital was invaluable, allowing me to apply classroom knowledge in a real world setting and reinforcing my passion for public service,” he shared.
Awande’s story is one of perseverance, support, and ambition, and he hopes it inspires others to pursue their dreams with courage and determination.
