Hard work pays off for McLuckie

Hard work pays off for McLuckie

After being named Best Final Year Student in Civil Engineering at DUT in 2010 by the South African Institute of Civil Engineering, Calvin McLuckie, a BTech in Civil Engineering student at DUT, graduated cum laude and received the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award for academic excellence when he graduated today, 23 April 2015.

McLuckie, a Site Engineer for Group Five, specialised in Water Engineering completing eight modules and their associated industry related projects as part of his BTech studies which took him two years to complete.

“My initial reaction when hearing that I had achieved the Dean’s Merit Award was shock. I worked hard for my BTech qualification but did not realise that it would pay off by achieving this great award. Once it had sunk in, I eagerly called my wife and parents to share the exciting news with them. I feel honoured to achieve this award and thank all those who supported me through my Journey,” said McLuckie.

While McLuckie had always wanted to study further after completing his matric, his family unfortunately could not afford this. However, through what he called “God’s grace”, construction firm Group Five, awarded him a bursary to study towards the National Diploma in Civil Engineering.

“I encountered many challenges during my BTech studies. Being a part time course and working a full time job, there was a tremendous workload placed on me. There was also the aspect of trying to balance family into the equation and not neglecting them during this journey. There were times when work required my extra attention after hours and at the same time; I had projects and exams due. I pulled through my qualification through hard work and dedication with the support of my family and God. I have achieved my BTech not only through the sacrifices that I have made, but through those of my family as well as their continuous support, motivation and belief in me,” said McLuckie.

McLuckie has completed just over 1.5 years in the Urban Development Division of a Durban based international consultancy and has just over 2.5 years experience in heavy construction.

He plans on registering as a professional Engineering Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) in the near future. “I’d like to thank the staff within the Civil Engineering Department at DUT for their dedication in lecturing and sharing their knowledge with me so that I could achieve this qualification,” he said.
