HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL GUGULETHU DLADLA INSPIRES THROUGH SERVICE AND EXCELLENCE

For Gugulethu Dladla from Umbumbulu, KwaZulu-Natal, graduating with Cum Laude and a Dean’s Merit Award was more than an academic achievement , it was the fulfilment of a dream built on sacrifice, perseverance, and an unwavering passion for healthcare.

Faculty of Health Sciences graduate and dedicated healthcare professional, proudly walked the stage to receive her Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing during the faculty’s graduation ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Friday, 22 May 2026. She has always been driven by the desire to improve the health and wellbeing of workers and communities . Her academic journey, however, was far from easy.

While pursuing her studies, she continued working full-time in the healthcare sector, balancing demanding work responsibilities with assignments, research, and family obligations. The pressure of caring for patients during the day and studying late into the night often left her physically and emotionally exhausted.

“There were times when I had to attend to patients during the day and continue with assignments and research late into the night. Financial pressures, fatigue, and managing deadlines were also challenging, but I remained focused on my goals and reminded myself why I started the journey,” she said.

Despite the challenges, she remained focused and determined. Through discipline, resilience, and consistency, she excelled academically and developed a deeper understanding of workplace health, disease prevention, occupational risk management, and employee wellness.

Receiving the news that she had graduated Cum Laude with a Dean’s Merit Award became an emotional and unforgettable moment ,not only for her, but for her entire family.

“My family was proud and emotional when they heard the news. They witnessed the sacrifices, long working hours, sleepless nights, and the pressure that came with balancing studies and work. Their support, encouragement, and prayers kept me motivated throughout the journey, and this achievement is not only mine but also theirs,” she said.

Currently working in the healthcare field, Gugulethu is actively involved in occupational health, primary healthcare, and health promotion services. She says her studies have strengthened her ability to apply knowledge directly into practice and contribute meaningfully to healthier and safer workplaces.

Her long-term goal is to continue growing as an occupational health practitioner while contributing to employee wellness programmes, workplace health promotion, and disease prevention strategies. She also hopes to mentor and inspire future healthcare professionals.

Importantly, Dladla has no intention of stopping her academic journey here. She plans to further her studies in advanced occupational health, public health, or primary healthcare management because she believes continuous learning is essential in the ever-evolving healthcare profession.

To first-year students and working professionals who may feel overwhelmed by the demands of studying, Dladla offers a message of encouragement and hope.

“Studying while working is not easy, but consistency and determination are key. Do not be afraid to ask for support, manage your time wisely, and always remember the purpose behind your journey,” she concluded.
