HIS LOVE FOR EXPLORING NEW EXPERIENCES IS WHAT LED SIBIYA TO PURSUE A CAREER IN NAUTICAL STUDIES

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Career Day in 2017 shaped Kwanele Sibiya’s career path. He was introduced to various careers, including maritime and that is where he first developed a passion for the maritime industry.

“I made up my mind to pursue Nautical Studies after completing my matric. I’m drawn to the maritime field because I love being at the sea and I enjoy taking on challenging experiences. I find it exciting to do something different,” he said.
The 22-year-old will be graduating Cum Laude for his Diploma in Nautical Studies in the much anticipated DUT 2024 Autumn Graduation ceremony, to be held on Tuesday, 21 May 2024 at the Olive Convention Centre.

“To be honest, graduating Cum Laude means everything to me, as it validates the countless hours of hard work, sleepless nights, and dedication I had invested towards my studies. I’m incredibly proud of myself for achieving this outstanding milestone. It is evident that my tireless efforts have truly paid off,” he added.

Sibiya is currently enrolled for his Advanced Diploma in Nautical Studies and is seeking for a cadetship to be fully recognised in his profession.  He encourages all first-year students who may be following his career path to always remind themselves of why they pursued their studies.

“University life is distracting but it is very important to prioritise your studies and stay focused. A key component to time management is doing assignments well and in time. Remember, stay committed, stay disciplined, and you will succeed,” he concluded.
