HOMEOPATHY STUDENTS EMPOWERED TO BUILD A PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL PRESENCE

The Department of Homeopathy, in partnership with the Communications Unit, recently hosted an online Social Media Training Workshop aimed at equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to maintain a professional and responsible digital presence.

Facilitated by DUT Communications Manager, Mr Tiyani Mboweni, the workshop explored the opportunities and challenges presented by social media, with a particular focus on digital footprints, online professionalism and responsible engagement on digital platforms.

During the session, students were encouraged to reflect on their social media habits and consider how their online activities can influence future academic, professional and career opportunities. Mr Mboweni highlighted the importance of protecting personal information, thinking carefully before posting content and maintaining a positive online presence.

“As future healthcare practitioners, students have a responsibility to uphold professional standards both offline and online. Social media can be a powerful tool for learning, networking and personal branding when used responsibly,” said Mr Mboweni.

Students were also introduced to ways in which platforms such as LinkedIn can be leveraged to build professional networks, showcase achievements, engage with industry professionals and stay informed about developments within their respective fields.

Reflecting on the workshop, Homeopathy student Ndlovu L said the session provided valuable insights into the role social media plays in professional development.

“I use social media regularly, especially LinkedIn, to connect with professionals, learn about career opportunities and stay informed about developments in healthcare. The workshop helped me understand the importance of managing my digital footprint and ensuring that my online presence reflects the professional image I want to build as a future healthcare practitioner,” she said.

Students were further reminded that they serve as ambassadors of both the University and the Homeopathy programme and were encouraged to contribute positively to online conversations while using appropriate channels to raise concerns and seek support.

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Homeopathy, Ms Cornelia Hall, expressed her appreciation to Mr Mboweni for delivering an informative and engaging session that provided students with practical skills to navigate the digital world responsibly.

The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to support student development by equipping future graduates with the professional, ethical and digital competencies required to succeed in an increasingly connected world.
