A Durban University of Technology (DUT) Human Resources graduate, Nicole Gokul has ventured into writing children’s books to provide the basic foundational knowledge a child needs to advance in school. In the past three weeks, she published four children’s book, which she described as learning tools for children.
Gokul (38) from Durban is a mother of three, a business woman, ordained pastor and an a published author. She owns a home baking business called Cole Creations and Novelty Cakes, where she caters to both cakes and kids’ parties. Cole Creations Kids is her new venture into children’s books.
She is a proud author of the following children’s books that were recently published:
1. Interactive Activities Early Childhood Development Colour and Learn Workbook – Published 28 June 2024
2. Interactive Activities Early Childhood Development Colour and Learn Workbook 2 – Published 29 June 2024
3. Tracing Numbers 1 to 50 – Published 1 July 2024
4. Alphabet Practice Writing and Colouring Workbook – Published 2 July 2024
Giving insight on her passion for writing, Gokul revealed she had always loved writing from her early years in high school.
“I started off writing little poems. My son always shows an eagerness to learn, and these books were inspired by him. Having the knowledge of what I used to look for when teaching my girls, I knew what content to include. My children were my motivation. Each one amazed me with how fast they would learn. They all knew the basic ABCs and counting to 10 before the age of two. As a parent, you want your kids to advance and grow. These books were based on themes that they would need in everyday life,” shared Gokul.
Explain her interest in the foundation phase books, Gokul stated that this phase was the most important aspect of early childhood development. In addition, she said the foundation phase builds a child’s abilities and helps them achieve success in their schooling life and into adulthood.
Sharing the highlight of her writing journey, Gokul said: “Honestly, just getting published was a highlight of its own. Seeing these books brought to life, with my voice in print, and knowing that they will help many parents aid their little ones’ progress was incredibly rewarding.“
She joined DUT in 2004 where she enrolled for a Diploma in Human Resource Management. Gokul is grateful to DUT for shaping her career. She indicated that she has used the knowledge she gained during her years at DUT to advance herself, especially with what she learned through the business management course. She applied the skills she acquired to her everyday advantage.
To those passionate about writing books, Gokul said they should never give up as one is never too old or too young to start something. She advised that a positive attitude goes a long way.
She is looking forward to publishing more children’s books in the future as she is currently working on a few books at the moment. Her books are available on Amazon.com, or one can contact her directly.
