Hundreds of DUT Students In Attendance At WoW Exhibition

Annually, the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Co-Operative Education Department invites various companies from different industries to their World of Work exhibition.

The two-day event gives DUT students an opportunity to interact with their potential employers after graduating at DUT. The 2017 WoW exhibition is no exception as hundreds of DUT students have gathered at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko Campus, to seek more information on their chosen careers and the world of work careers that are available in South Africa.

Over 91 companies have been invited for the 2017 WoW exhibition, to give students insight on what industry expects from them and how they (students) can position themselves as favorable employment candidates.

Co-Operative Education Department staff member and WoW organiser, Mbali Khwela, said such events were created for students to fundamentally take advantage of the engagement opportunity between them and the different companies.

“We have been planning the 2017 WoW exhibition since the previous year (2016). Every year we try to attract new companies. Our aim is to basically give students insight into their future after graduation and often, some do get hired through such exhibitions,” said Khwela.

She also added that the attendance from students has always been positive and many of them have applauded the initiative. Confirming Khwela’s statement was a second year electrical engineering student, Snamile Zwane, who said WoW had been a great source of information for her.

“I have been attending WoW since my first year and I have found it to be one of the best guiding initiatives by the University towards my chosen field. Unfortunately, today, I was here for Eskom but they are not exhibiting,” said Zwane.

Some of the companies that are exhibiting at WoW are Multichoice, the Foschini group, SAPS, Msunduzi municipality, SA Navy, Rennies Travel, Nedbank, to name but a few. Students have been urged to keep attending WoW every year.
